- VALENTINE CARDS IN SUPPORT OF THE LOVE OF EDUCATION IN WEST AFRICA
- TEN YEAR OLD JAKOB CONRAD TRAVELLED TO THE SMALL WEST AFRICAN NATION OF THE GAMBIA LAST VALENTINE’S DAY (2011) AND DELIVERED ALMOST $3000 HE RAISED IN SUPPORT OF EDUCATION. THIS YEAR, HE IS SHARING HIS EXPERIENCE AND CONTINUING TO RAISE MONEY FOR EDUCATION IN WEST AFRICA BY MAKING AND SELLING VALENTINE ‘S CARDS TO BENEFIT THE NOVA SCOTIA-GAMBIA ASSOCIATION
Jakob Conrad is ten years old and already thinking about ways that he can “make a
difference”. When he told his mom that going with her to The Gambia during his
February break would be “like a dream come true”, she was convinced that he was
ready for this trip of a lifetime. Knowing that he would come away from this
experience with an enriched perspective on life and a lifetime of new friends,
they talked about how he could give something in return. He decided that he
would raise money for the Nova Scotia Gambia Association (NSGA) by establishing
a fundraising organization of his own. For 25 years, the NSGA has worked with West Africans and Canadians to build healthy communities in The Gambia. Through education and health promotion initiatives, NSGA staff and volunteers have become a major force in youth and community education in West Africa.* He also wanted
100% of the proceeds from his fundraising to support the NSGA, and education in
The Gambia in particular. He named his organization Twoonies from Toubabs. In
The Gambia, foreigners are pleasantly referred to as “Toubabs”. When Jakob
heard this, he thought that he might be able to make things and sell them for a
“Twoonie”, coining the clever and catchy “Twoonies from Toubabs”. His first
project was a Valentine Card sale. He arrived in The Gambia on Valentine’s Day,
2011 and learned a lifetime in just two short weeks there. He is spreading the
word about his experience this February, which happens to also be African
Heritage Month in schools in Nova Scotia. His passion to raise money for
education in West Africa continues this year, with 6 new Twoonies from Toubabs
Valentine Cards. The cards are selling for $2 each or 6 for $10. These can be
purchased by contacting the NSGA office. He has set a goal of $2000.00. Please
help him meet and surpass this target! You can learn more information about

The NSGA needs volunteers to assist with a variety of Fundraising Initiatives!
As in past years we are looking forward to having a great silent auction
at our African Dinner, scheduled for May 12th at Saint Mary’s
University. The committee that has worked so hard and so well for the
last several years have either “taken sabbaticals” or “retired”. We
need your help to replace them!
The silent auction team will be responsible for soliciting items,
packaging and labeling them for sale, setting up the display on the
afternoon of May 12, and helping with the sale of the goods at the
dinner. If you can be any part of this activity please let us know by email june.boswell@novascotiagambia.ca or phone call: 423-1360 at the office.
Thank You!
