Gifts of Investments/Listed Securities

Listed securities including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, futures traded on approved stock exchanges in Canada, and major international exchangescan be donated to registered charities such as NSGA. The Government of Canada has eliminated capital gains on the donation of such securities. You will also receive a charitable donation receipt for the entire amount of the market value of the securities, just as if your gift had been a cash donation.

To derive the tax benefits, you must transfer the securities directly to NSGA or to CanadaHelps, not sell them first.

You can make a gift of securities two ways:

1. Through NSGA’s broker, for details contact  June Boswell at:

Nova Scotia-Gambia Association
1574 Argyle Street, Suite 17
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Canada  B3J 2B3

2. Through CanadaHelps.org:

CanadaHelps is proud to be the first charity in Canada to accept gifts of securities donations online. Link to Canada Helps, complete the online process with financial information and donor details. Sign and give your financial advisor your Letter of Authorization. You will receive your tax receipt by e-mail once the shares have been sold; and NSGA will receive the funds.
