Donate Online

Nova Scotia-Gambia Association has partnered with CanadaHelps.org, a not-for-profit
charity portal and a registered public foundation that seeks to promote and
facilitate philanthropy through online giving. CanadaHelps.org offers its services
at no cost to the charity or the donor.
How do you donate?
All you have to do is click the “donate now” button and follow
the instructions. You can make a one-time donation, monthly contributions or
an in memoriam gift. All information entered is strictly confidential and securely
protected, and donor information is only provided to the charity to which the
donation has been made.
How to donors get a receipt?
Donations made through the CanadaHelps.org website are treated in the same
way as regular receiptable charitable donations. The Canadian Customs and Revenue
Agency has approved the use of electronic tax receipts. Usually within minutes
of successfully completing a donation, the donor receives an e-mail notification
confirming the transaction. Because CanadaHelps.org is a registered public
foundation, donors are e-receipted for a donation to CanadaHelps.org. The donation
is processed and funds are directed to the Nova Scotia-Gambia Association bank
account.
Can donors make an anonymous donation?
Yes. All that is required is that the donor checks the appropriate box when
prompted and anonymity is guaranteed.
Direct Mail
If you prefer to support NSGA offline, you can send a cheque to NSGA. If you

United Way of Canada –Centraide
Canada
By naming Nova Scotia-Gambia Association, charity number 137152385, on your
United Way/Centraide return, your employee deductions will be automatically
designated for NSGA. We, in turn, will receive quarterly payments on your behalf.
Your charity receipt will be prepared by United Way. Please consider this method
when September payroll deductions plans are made available. Donating made easy
for you while providing NSGA assurance of sustaining funds!
Special Occasions
Celebrate special events in your life – weddings, births, birthdays,
retirements, memorials, holidays – with a donation to NSGA on behalf
of your friend or family member. We send that person a card or letter (or we
can send it to you so that you can mail it yourself). You'll receive a tax
receipt for the amount of the gift and the recipient of the card will share
in the knowledge that this gift will help children and youth in Africa lead
healthier lives. To make a donation in memory of a loved one or special friend,
colleague or neighbor, please contact the Halifax NSGA Office at:

Gifts of Investments/Listed Securities
In its 2006 budget, the Canadian federal government eliminated capital gains
tax on listed stocks donated to registered charities such as the Nova Scotia-Gambia
Association.
Listed securities include: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, futures traded on approved
stock exchanges in Canada, and major international exchanges.
Tax benefits to the donor
Normally, when you sell securities, tax must be paid on 50% of any capital
gain. However, when you donate the same securities to a charitable organization,
you will not pay tax on the capital gain. In fact, the combined benefit of
paying no tax on the capital gain and the charitable tax receipt you receive
on the entire amount provides excellent tax benefits when making your charitable
gift.
When you donate securities, you will receive a charitable donation receipt
for the entire amount of the market value of the securities, just as if your
gift had been a cash donation.
To derive the tax benefits, you must transfer the securities directly to NSGA
or to CanadaHelps, not sell them first.
If you would like to make a gift of securities to support the work of NSGA
in West Africa you may do so through one of two ways:
1. Through NSGA’s broker.

2. Through CanadaHelps.org.
CanadaHelps is proud to be the first charity in Canada to accept gifts of securities
donations online. Click on Canada
Helps, complete the online process with financial
information and donor details. Sign and give your financial advisor your Letter
of Authorization.
You will receive your tax receipt by email once the shares have been sold;
and NSGA will receive the funds.
You can make a difference!
